INTERVIEW: Ellis Simms on facing Man United, playing at Wembley and excitement levels

City face Manchester United this weekend...

19 April 2024

Ellis Simms is looking forward to the 'challenge' that awaits him and his teammates this weekend at Wembley Stadium.

City will face Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final, at stage of the competition the Sky Blues haven't been in since 1987.

Simms is City's leading goalscorer in the competition this season, having scored five goals with two assists so far.

Ellis is looking ahead to kick-off and testing himself against United and trying to create a moment of history.

The FA Cup semi-final…

“When I first saw the tie, I was excited. We knew whatever team we were drawn against it would be a good test because there were three quality teams left in.

I want to test myself against these Premier League players and we’re all excited.”

Facing Manchester United…

“I’m going into the game in decent form and I’m confident and I want to express myself in a big game, at Wembley, with lots of fans there.

I’m not looking at the opposition too much. We know they have still quality, despite who’s injured.

They have a good squad depth, and we know it’s going to be a challenge, but I’m just looking forward to it and I’m just focusing on myself and trying to implement what I’m good at on the game.”

Potentially scoring at Wembley…

“Any goal at Wembley would be a great feeling, regardless of who you’re playing. It’s an iconic stadium, home of the national team.

I’m sure if a goal goes in for us it will be a great feeling for the fans and the everyone really.”

Being a boyhood Manchester City fan…

“Growing up as a Man City fan as a kid, you go to the games and stuff like that, but as you get older, you’re in the game and you focus at the club you’re at and you just focus on who you’re playing for.”

The message come kick-off…

“It’s a big occasion and we just have to stay calm and not overthink anything too much. We just need to do what we normally do on a match-to-match basis.

We have to stick together from minute one to the final whistle. We’ve had a good week of training and we’re just looking forward to kick-off now.”

36,000 Sky Blues fans inside Wembley…

“When the fans are there, you embrace it and it’s nicer to hear them and the noise they create.

They’re like having an extra man when they’re cheering and chanting, and they get right behind us and give us that extra bit of energy.

We thrive off the fans and the more there is, the better it is.”

How special a win would be…

“It would be massive. We just want to get as far as we can, and we know the further you go the harder it gets.

The quarter-final was a special moment, and we know on Sunday it will be difficult, but we want to keep performing well and give it our best shot.”
