INTERVIEW: Mark Robins looks back on Ipswich Town defeat

Post-match reaction from the City boss...

30 April 2024

Mark Robins gave his immediate reaction after City fell to defeat against Ipswich Town at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Haji Wright had levelled the game up in the second half, but Ipswich scored the decisive goal through Cameron Burgess.

Speaking after the final whistle, Robins looked back on the game and gave his thoughts on the events.

The game’s opening goal…

“Coming into the game my concern was energy and that wasn’t the case today which I’m pleased with.

“The problem was that we gave away too many easy chances up to opponents that have quality.

“The first goal we conceded was against the run of play, we started fairly brightly, and we played some really good football all night.

“They got down our right-hand side and cut the ball back and we do what we always do, we don’t defend it properly and we drop on to the line and think that’s fine and they get the cut back and it’s a simple tap in.”

The defensive side…

“For me, we have to be better out of possession throughout the side. The defensive side of the game; they’ve had 14 shots, we’ve had 13 and they’ve had 12 inside of our box and hit the target nine times and Brad has had to make save after save, which is ridiculous, so we have to be better.

“Whilst there’s some good defending, interceptions, passing from to back front and we get into good positions, but we give the ball away too easy.

“I don’t want to see, oh it’s an easy thing ‘we’ve given another goal away’, that can’t happen, a lot of work has got to go on between now and the end of the season.”

Haji’s goal…

“I’m disappointed with the result clearly, having got ourselves back into it with a really good goal.

“It was a good finish rom Haji and then they started to go and we have to smell that and go after the game, btu what we did is we started to give the ball away and couldn’t keep that momentum.”

Ipswich’s second goal…

“We didn’t have that little bit of quality and nouse to go and do them again, then the second goal, we gave them.

“The ball comes into the box, and we don’t deal with it, and it bobbles around and they put it into the back of the net, it’s too easy.”

Aidan Dausch going close late on…

“He brought it out of the air and took it onto his left foot and opened his body up and to try the shot is brilliant.

“The mechanics for that, everything was there in place other than the execution of the finish, but everything is there, just keep doing it, it was exciting.”
