Coventry City have signed midfielder Joe Cole on a free transfer.

The Sky Blues have snapped up the former Chelsea man after impressing during a loan spell at the club, signing a deal until the end of the 2015/16 season.

The 34-year old started his career at West Ham before moving to Chelsea in 2003 where he went on to make 183 league appearances for the Blues, scoring 28 goals.

After seven years at Stamford Bridge, moves to Liverpool and a loan spell to French Ligue 1 side Lille followed before rejoining boyhood club West Ham in 2013.

He made 31 appearances in a one-year spell at Upton Park, scoring five goals before he moved to Aston Villa in June 2014. Cole has also enjoyed a fantastic international career with 56 caps for England, scoring 10 goals for the Three Lions.

Since joining the Sky Blues on loan, Cole has made seven appearances for City and scored one goal, a stunning free-kick in the 4-3 win over Barnsley.

Mowbray said: "Since he joined the club, I've really enjoyed working with Joe and delighted to see him sign on for the rest of the season.

"Our staff have worked hard with him to build up his fitness and physicality, and we've seen Joe really buy into what we're trying to do here.

"He's great to have around the dressing room and the rest of the squad feed off his experience, and I'm sure it'll have a positive impact on our younger players as well.

"I only see his performances for the club getting better and he is a fantastic option to have from now until the end of the season."
