Elliott to fight for starting place

Sky Blues striker states his intention to break into starting line-up after crucial goal in win over Oldham

Sky Blues striker Stephen Elliott says he wants to keep pushing for a starting place after setting City on their way to a dramatic 2-1 win over Oldham Athletic at the Ricoh Arena.

The Irishman came off the bench in the second half to head Mark Robins' side into the lead after an hour with James Bailey netting the winner for the hosts with the last kick of the game after Matt Smith levelled the scores with a minute of normal time to go.

He said it had been frustrating playing a bit-part role for the majority of the season but added he was going to continue to work hard in the hope of forcing his way into the starting line up.

"After we took the lead, seeing them equalise with a minute to go makes you think a win's not on the cards but James has popped up with a terrific winner for us so I'm delighted," he said.

"It was good for me as well to come off the bench and score because the manager likes to play one up front and it's been frustrating for me but I will keep working hard because it's important to keep sharp and hopefully I can break back into the starting line up because, like I say, it's been frustrating.

"It was definitely important we got the wintoday because, with the Tranmere win on Wednesday, it gives us back-to-back wins at home and winning breeds confidence.

"We seem to able to score goals from all over the park as well so that's a good thing we need to make the most of."
