Charles Vernam with the only goal as the Sky Blues secure victory against Forest...

Nicky Eaden's U23 side secured victory at the Ricoh Arena, with Charles Vernam scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win against Nottingham Forest.

It was a strong start from the visiting side, with midfielder Yassin Eneyah involved in nearly all of the attacking play. It was his free-kick that brought the first shot on target, but Corey Addai was equal to it, saving at his near post.

The Sky Blues first sight of goal came through Kyle Spence. Deployed as a number ten behind lone striker Charles Vernam, he found space in front of the Forest defence, but couldn’t find the target with a long range effort.

Forest had the best chance of the half shortly after, when Aaron Smith played the ball towards Virgil Gomis. Through on goal, the striker took one touch before sliding the ball past Addai, but inches wide of the far post.

Gomis was in the thick of the action again in the last chance before the interval. The striker collected the ball on the edge of the box and curled an effort towards the top corner, but Addai superbly tipped it over the upright.

City started the second half brighter and soon took the lead on the hour mark through Charles Vernam. The striker met a ball over the top, and after an initial coming together with Jordan Wright in the Forest net, the Derby loanee finished from close range to give the home side the edge.

However, Forest should have been level soon after. Gomis and Smith once again linked up, as the number ten found himself through on goal, but the busy Addai was on hand again to deny the visiting side.

The Sky Blues responded and could have doubled their advantage if not for a wonderful save moments later. Jordan Shipley fired goalwards from 25-yards after a cleared corner, but Wright denied him by palming over the crossbar.

Forest threatened in the final stages, but were unable to test Addai in the Coventry goal, as Nicky Eaden’s side ensured the club's winning ways continued.
