Coventry City claimed second spot in League One with a brillaint comeback win against Colchester United.

Macauley Bonne put the home side ahead but a first-half brace from Jacob Murphy and a close-range finish from Marc Antoine Fortune sealed the points for City.

The Sky Blues had just one change coming into the game with Romain Vincelot replacing Conor Thomas and started strongly at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Jacob Murphy was in space and his shot was blocked which fell for Ruben Lameiras but Joe Edwards slid across to deny City once again inside the 2nd minute.

Marc-Antoine Fortune was a constant cause for concern for the U's defence and he played in Murphy on the left-side of the area but his low shot only found the side netting in the 5th minute.

It took the home side 17 minutes to muster their first attempt, and it opened the scoring. Alex Gilbey found Callum Harriott on the left who had space to cross and Macauley Bonne tapped home, unmarked, to put the home side ahead.

Colchester looked like adding to the scoreline soon after as George Moncur's free-kick was parried behind and Marvin Sordell's low shot hit the post before the half-hour.

It woke City up, and the Sky Blues equalised minutes later. Lameiras found Fortune on the left and he delivered a low cross towards the six-yard box, which Tom Eastman failed to clear, for Murphy to slot home.

Murphy wasn't finished. Just six minutes before the break, Fortune took the quick free-kick which caught the U's defence out and Murphy had all the time and space to round the keeper at put City ahead before the break.

City completed the scoring shortly after the break. Lameiras continued a lively afternoon when he turned inside and fired towards goal which Jones spilled into the path of Fortune who tapped home a deserved goal.

Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the game was City's game management, restricting the home side to very few chances during the second-half.

In fact, City could have gone further ahead. Substitute Ryan Haynes almost capped off a lively cameo in the 86th minute when he cut inside Edwards and curled his effort narrowly wide.

The U's mustered a few late efforts as Gavin Massey was brilliantly denied from close range by Reice Charles-Cook with minutes left on the clock.

The Sky Blues remained vigilant until the final whistle as they go second and set up a top of the table clash against Gillingham next week.
